Preparing students to meet the demands of today's workplace is a challenge for colleges and industries. Alabama Southern's industry alliance is a partnership between Alabama Southern, local industries and the communities of Southwest Alabama. When local industries are closely tied to rural communities as in the case of pulp and paper manufacturers, unique solutions are required to develop a "home grown" workforce. Add in the highly competitive global economy of pulp and paper manufacturers and you begin to understand the need for bold new partnerships. Thus is the genesis of The Alabama Southern Industry Alliance for a Technologically Advanced Workforce.

Two major objectives of the Alabama Southern Industry Alliance are to create a world-class workforce for local industries and to guarantee that local area citizens are prepared to perform to that level of expectation. While primarily focusing on new hires, incumbent workers will not be left behind. Technologically Advanced Workers of the future will be highly skilled and multi-crafted.

A common theme of the companies comprising the Alabama Southern Industry Alliance is funding and support for the scholarships-internships-jobs initiative. By funding scholarships for students who attend Alabama Southern in one of the Advanced Technology programs, hosting those students for paid internships at the plant, and then giving these students consideration for positions/vacancies in the company a win-win-win alliance is formed. The community gains an economic development advantage as local residents receive high quality education, local companies benefit from these technologically advanced workers and Alabama Southern gains support for students who might otherwise be unable to attend college.
